EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH INMACULADA GALDEANO, DIETITIAN-NUTRITIONIST.
At OhMyKoko , we understand that skin well-being goes far beyond what we apply to it.
Our skin activism approach takes us deeper, analyzing how our daily choices, including diet , affect the health and vitality of your skin. We know that to truly care for your skin, it's essential to avoid what harms it , both inside and out.
That's why we are delighted to interview Inmaculada Galdeano , a leading dietician-nutritionist who will talk to us about a crucial topic: how miracle diets , although they promise quick results, can have a negative effect on the skin .
Inmaculada Galdeano will show us the hidden dangers behind these diets and how a healthy and conscious diet can be our best ally to maintain radiant and balanced skin .
Discover in this interview how skin activism also means saying "no" to quick and harmful solutions , and learning to nourish our bodies responsibly and sustainably.
WHAT ARE MIRACLE DIETS AND WHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR AFTER SUMMER?
Miracle diets are those that promise results quickly and without “effort” .
HOW CAN WE IDENTIFY A MIRACLE DIET?
Most of them usually appear after a specific event or season of the year (post-holidays, post-Christmas, bikini operation...) and they all have things in common:
- Food groups are prohibited . No bread, no legumes, no dairy products, no fruits...
- They have a list of good and bad foods
- They promote rapid weight loss .
- They have a very “cool” name or have the word method in front of them.
- They are supplemented with food products or food substitutes .
- It has been made or is being made by a famous person , celebrity or influencer .
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON EFFECTS OF MIRACLE DIETS ON THE SKIN?
These types of “fantastic” diets will make you lose weight, yes, but mostly muscle mass and water .
That weight loss that usually occurs quickly is lean tissue. That lean tissue, like muscle and water , shapes or makes the skin firmer, so when you lose it, sagging skin and wrinkles appear.
Being so restrictive, the lack of nutrients that these diets entail will cause flaccidity , not only in the arms , legs and belly , but also in the face .
WHAT ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS ARE USUALLY MISSING IN MIRACLE DIETS AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT SKIN HEALTH?
In many of these diets, fruit is almost restricted, as are some vegetables, such as bananas, grapes, pumpkin, figs...
In general, vegetables and fruits provide water and a multitude of vitamins and minerals that help us with antioxidant effects and in the formation of collagen .
WHAT SIGNS ON THE SKIN CAN INDICATE THAT A DIET IS UNHEALTHY?
The most noticeable signs are dryness , flaking and the appearance of more wrinkles .
The skin's natural barrier is altered, making skin infections more likely to appear and wounds taking longer to heal .
In the case of certain skin diseases such as psoriasis , atopic dermatitis or acne , they could worsen.
WHAT ARE THE LONG-TERM RISKS TO THE SKIN WITH MIRACLE DIETS?
You could say premature aging of the skin, dehydration and loss of elasticity .
WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD YOU GIVE FOR MAINTAINING HEALTHY SKIN WHILE FOLLOWING A BALANCED DIET?
Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep or rest , manage stress as much as possible, take walks outdoors and avoid toxins such as alcohol or tobacco.
HOW CAN SKIN DAMAGE BE REVERSED BY A MIRACLE DIET?
Start eating a diet with enough vegetables and fruit , at least 5 servings a day between all of them, choose foods rich in omega 3 (nuts, salmon, trout, mackerel, seeds...), drink water as your main beverage, at least with that as a minimum you would notice an improvement in your skin .
WHAT FOODS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO IMPROVE SKIN HEALTH AFTER FOLLOWING A RESTRICTIVE DIET?
Include foods rich in essential fatty acids (nuts, fish, especially blue fish such as salmon, melva, mackerel, seeds, avocado, olive oil...)
- Increase your consumption of vegetables , especially those rich in vitamins A, E and C (tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, spinach, citrus fruits, broccoli, etc.).
- Moderate or reduce consumption of alcoholic beverages and sugary soft drinks .
- Drink water or sparkling water.
- Reduce ultra-processed products rich in refined sugars and low-quality fats.
WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD WE LOOK FOR IN COSMETIC PRODUCTS TO HELP REPAIR SKIN DAMAGE CAUSED BY POOR DIET?
Among the ingredients that our cosmetics should contain are vitamin C , hyaluronic acid , zinc , shea butter, olive or avocado oil , ceramides , peptides and in some we can find probiotics , also very interesting for restoring and protecting the skin's microbiome.
Depending on each person's skin, we will look for the one that has the highest concentration of one or the other.
