WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER? HOW DID IT INFLUENCE YOUR CURRENT STYLE AND APPROACH?
One of the highlights of my career was when I worked with Norma Duval for the first time in 2005 on a cover for “Hola” magazine. It was a leap forward in my career as a celebrity makeup artist and work for film, television, runways and editorials with prestigious haute couture designers, were projects that allowed me to combine makeup, hair and styling in a creative and collaborative way. The experience not only gave me a greater understanding of teamwork within the industry, but also inspired me to be more versatile and bold in my style. Since then, I have adopted a more experimental and risk-taking approach, which has influenced my ability to adapt to the needs of each project without losing my creative identity.
AS A MAKEUP ARTIST AND STYLIST, HOW DO YOU DEFINE THE IMPORTANCE OF WELL-CARED FOR SKIN BEFORE MAKEUP?
As a makeup artist and stylist, I believe that well-cared for skin is the fundamental foundation for flawless makeup . When skin is healthy, hydrated, and blemish-free, makeup applies more evenly and naturally, allowing products to adhere better and last longer . Additionally, well-prepped skin reduces the need to use heavy products to cover imperfections, resulting in a fresher, more luminous look. Taking care of your skin before makeup not only improves the finish , but also protects its health in the long run.
WHAT MYTH ABOUT MAKEUP OR SKIN CARE WOULD YOU LIKE TO DEBUN?
One of the most common myths I would like to debunk is that people with oily skin do not need to moisturize or should avoid using moisturizers . The reality is that oily skin needs hydration too.
When you skip this step, your skin may produce more sebum in an attempt to compensate for the lack of moisture, which ends up making the problem worse . The trick is to choose the right moisturizing products, which are light and non-comedogenic , to balance your skin without clogging your pores.
WHAT FACIAL CARE ROUTINE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO THOSE WHO WEAR MAKEUP DAILY TO KEEP THEIR SKIN HEALTHY?
For those who wear makeup on a daily basis, I would recommend a facial care routine that focuses on both deep cleansing and moisturizing and protecting . Here is a basic routine:
- Before washing your face , it is crucial to remove all makeup , especially from the eyes and lips .
- GENTLE CLEANSER : After removing makeup, use a cleanser suitable for your skin type to remove any product residue and impurities accumulated during the day.
- EXFOLIATION (2-3 times a week): Gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and prevents clogged pores . This keeps the skin texture even and ready for makeup.
- TONER : Using a toner balances the skin's pH and prepares it to better absorb subsequent products.
- HYDRATING OR ANTIOXIDANT SERUM : Serums, such as hyaluronic acid for hydration or vitamin C as an antioxidant, nourish the skin and protect it from environmental damage.
- LIGHT MOISTURIZER : Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type . Even if you have oily skin, a light cream is essential to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
- SUNSCREEN (day): Sunscreen is a must , even if you don't go out much. It helps prevent premature aging and protects from the harmful effects of UV rays.
- HYDRATING OR SOOTHING MASKS (1-2 times a week)**: Masks can provide extra hydration and nourishment to the skin, especially if you frequently wear makeup.
By following this routine, your skin will stay more balanced and healthy , allowing your makeup to apply better and avoiding common problems like acne breakouts or dryness .
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU LOOK FOR IN PRODUCTS TO PREPARE YOUR SKIN BEFORE APPLYING MAKEUP?
To prep my skin before applying makeup, I look for products with ingredients that provide hydration, softness, and a luminous finish , without compromising skin health. Some of the key ingredients I look for are:
- HYALURONIC ACID : It is a powerful moisturizer that retains moisture in the skin, helping the surface look soft and smooth, providing a perfect base for makeup.
- NIACINAMIDE : This ingredient is known to calm skin , reduce redness and minimize pores, contributing to a more even appearance.
- GLYCERIN : A humectant that draws moisture to the skin, leaving it feeling moisturized without being heavy. Ideal for ensuring that makeup adheres properly.
- ANTIOXIDANTS (such as vitamin C or E)**: Protect the skin from environmental damage and give it a natural glow. They help keep the skin healthy and revitalized.
- CENTELLA ASIATICA OR ALOE VERA EXTRACTS : They are soothing and perfect for reducing any irritation or inflammation before applying makeup, ensuring a more even application.
- PRIMERS : Primers are useful for filling in fine lines and pores, creating a smooth surface on which makeup is applied flawlessly.
These ingredients ensure that the skin is hydrated, balanced and primed so that your makeup not only looks better, but lasts longer too.
HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE RESULTS OF YOUR MAKEUP?
Yes, I have definitely noticed a huge difference in makeup results when a proper skincare routine is not followed. When skin is not well cared for, makeup tends to look less even and long-lasting . Some of the most common problems include:
- UNEVEN TEXTURE : If skin is not exfoliated or moisturized , makeup can highlight dry patches, flaky skin, or irregularities in texture. This makes it difficult to achieve a smooth, polished finish.
- MAKEUP THAT CRACKS OR FADES QUICKLY : Dehydrated or poorly prepared skin does not retain makeup well , causing it to crack, especially in areas such as the eye contour or around the mouth .
- INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION : Without proper hydration, skin tends to produce more sebum , which can cause makeup to slide , look excessively shiny , or fade more quickly.
- DIFFICULTY BLENDING : Applying products like foundation or concealers becomes more difficult if skin is not properly prepped, resulting in blotchy or patchy skin rather than an even finish.
- ACCENTUATION OF PORES AND FINE LINES : Without good hydration and preparatory products, makeup tends to settle in pores and fine lines , making them more visible.
A proper facial care routine is key to keeping your makeup looking flawless and lasting longer, as well as maintaining long-term skin health.
IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO YOU THINK ARE MADE IN RESPECT OF SKIN CARE BEFORE APPLYING MAKEUP?
In my experience, some of the common mistakes people make when it comes to skin care before applying makeup are:
- NOT CLEANSING YOUR SKIN PROPERLY : Many people skip the step of cleansing their face or do not use a proper cleanser. Applying makeup on skin with impurities or residue from previous products can make it look dull and less uniform .
- NOT MOISTURIZING PROPERLY : Whether it's because they're in a hurry or because they think their oily skin doesn't need it, many avoid moisturizing before makeup. This is essential for achieving a smooth base and preventing makeup from settling into fine lines or dry patches .
- NOT USING SUNSCREEN : Sunscreen is sometimes skipped because people think makeup is enough protection. However, UV rays still affect the skin, which can lead to premature aging and sun damage .
- USING PRODUCTS THAT ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE : Every skin type has different needs . Some people use products that are too oily for oily skin or not moisturizing enough for dry skin, which affects the finish and duration of the makeup.
- DON'T LET PRODUCTS ABSORB : Applying makeup immediately after moisturizer or serum without giving the skin time to absorb the products can cause the makeup to not adhere well or slide off .
- DO NOT USE PRIMER : Although it is not mandatory, primer can make a big difference by creating a barrier between the skin and the makeup, helping to smooth the texture and prolong the duration of the look.
- EXFOLIATING TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE : Exfoliating is crucial for smooth skin, but over-exfoliating can irritate skin , while not exfoliating enough can leave it looking dull and textured .
Avoiding these mistakes can significantly improve the appearance of your makeup and keep your skin healthy in the long run.
SKIN WELLNESS IS A CENTRAL LINE AT OHMYKOKO. WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK NATURAL PRODUCTS PLAY IN SKIN CARE AND PREPARATION?
Natural products play an important role in skin care and preparation, especially at brands like OhMyKoko , where skin wellness is central. These products are often formulated with ingredients that are less likely to irritate the skin, which is critical for maintaining a healthy and balanced skin barrier .
Some key benefits of natural products in your skin care and preparation routine include:
- LESS IRRITATION AND ALLERGIC REACTIONS : Free of harsh ingredients such as synthetic fragrances, parabens or sulfates , which can cause irritation or breakouts, especially on sensitive skin.
- NATURE-DERIVED NUTRIENTS : Ingredients like aloe vera, essential oils, plant extracts and natural butters not only moisturize and soothe , but also provide antioxidants and vitamins that promote cell regeneration and protect the skin from free radicals.
- SKIN COMPATIBILITY : Natural ingredients are often more compatible with the skin's natural balance . For example, oils such as jojoba or almond are similar to the sebum our skin produces, making them easier to absorb without clogging pores .
- SUSTAINABILITY AND LOWER ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT : In addition to their skin benefits, many natural product brands, such as OhMyKoko , promote sustainability. The use of biodegradable ingredients and ethical production practices helps reduce environmental impact.
- IMPROVED OVERALL WELLBEING : By using natural products, artificial toxins and chemicals are avoided , contributing to a more holistic approach to self-care. This goes beyond appearance and aligns with a wellness philosophy that connects skin health to overall body health.
Natural products not only improve the quality and appearance of the skin, but also encourage a more conscious and respectful routine for the body and the environment, which fits perfectly with OhMyKoko's values.
IF YOU COULD RECOMMEND ONE ESSENTIAL SKIN CARE STEP BEFORE APPLYING MAKEUP, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
If I could recommend just one essential skincare step before makeup, it would be moisturizing . Regardless of skin type, moisturizing is key to ensuring makeup goes on evenly and stays on longer .
Well-hydrated skin is more balanced and supple , making it easier to apply products like foundation and concealers. It also reduces the chance of makeup settling into fine lines, pores, or dry areas , preventing an uneven or patchy finish .
This step also helps keep the skin protected throughout the day , as a hydrated barrier is more resistant to external aggressors such as pollution and temperature changes . In short, hydration is the foundation of healthy skin and flawless makeup.
